About Marge

Eating glass eels in Spain!

Hi, I’m Marge! I am a freelance food & drink writer and recipe blogger. After getting laid off from my job as a financial journalist, I spent a year in culinary school learning how to force vegetables into unlikely shapes, cut up beef hearts and make Southern biscuits from a Southern pastry chef before taking on food writing full time, because I love large plates of food and small paychecks. Here I’ll share some of my favorite recipes and stories from the kitchen–where much of life happens for me.

I live in Chicago with my husband Sean and dog Penny, both of whom prefer steak over vegetables.

  1. Dear M – I’m loving your beautiful cooking blog AND learning. I’ve purchased ALL the books you raved about while we dined at Frasca: Italian Home Cooking, Molto Gusto, Simply Ming One-Pot Meals. I’m reading them like novels. I was introduced to a new foodie site and wanted to share it with you – http://www.gilttaste.com/. Your wedding nuptials are ever so close and I wish you and Sean a most exquisite day filled with the joy of love for one another and those who come to celebrate with you.

    • Paula, thank you so so much for your lovely note! I am now a Mrs., which is very hard to believe but really wonderful! I want to also thank you for all the wonderful resources you gave me. Food is a never-ending source of excitement, which I think is a feeling you share!

Take care, and keep in touch! 🙂

  2. Hi there Lovely Lady!

This is a beautiful blog written by a beautiful woman. Not only is your passion for food evident – your writing is seamless. You have a gift with words and an uncanny ability to thread humor into each piece. Not too many food connoisseur have such an ability. I think big things are ahead of you, my dear.

And hopefully, big things are ahead of me too — I’m not a natural chef. (And yes, most times when I try, I end up grabbing for the to go menu too!) But now that I can read Marge’s Next Meal from the comfort of my inbox.. I have a feeling some spectacular dinners are in my future.

Please stay in touch!!! I just love the fact our meeting was so serendipitous.

  3. Hello Marge…I just read your recipe for Bolognese and I can’t wait to try it! You’re absolutely right about the cool weather…time to pull out the denim apron for fall and start really cooking!
Nice to see you’re doing so well!

  4. I love your blog so far! I’m going to culinary school in March, but I so love food writing that I hope to do some of that in my life, too. Anyway, you have a new loyal reader!

  5. Greetings, Marge.
I had to smile at the line about loving large plates of food and small paychecks. As a food historian, I may actually have smaller paychecks than you do — and yet I love my life so much, I can’t imagine any other.
I’m glad to see that you’re still blogging. (I tried to access Thought for Food, which I followed while you were at culinary school, but that’s locked now.) Anyway, pleased to see where you landed. Welcome to the world of working for love.
